There are lots of different reasons that might bring a person to therapy where I hope I can offer people support in addressing. People might look for support in response to concerns or difficulties stemming from things that are going on in their life now, or long-term issues that may arise from past experiences or relationships. Often people may feel stuck – in a certain place in their lives, or in patterns of behaviour that have a negative impact on them.

People may approach me seeking out therapy for some of the following reasons:

  • Anxiety, stress and overwhelming worries

  • Trauma and abuse

  • Identity, including sexual identity, and sense of belonging

  • Work related issues

  • Feelings of anger and frustration

  • Depression, sadness and low moods

  • Problems in relationships – family, romantic, work related

  • Loss; including bereavement and grief

  • Self-esteem, lack of confidence or issues around self-worth or body image

  • Suicidal thoughts, self-harm and OCD

What to expect

‘People often come to therapy hoping that the therapist will provide them with the answer. The truth is, the answer is already within them
— Irvin D Yalom

Therapy is not about giving people advice or telling them what to do. It’s a process of helping people to explore their lived experience and ways of being in the world in order to help them to understand themselves better.

Therapy can sometimes be challenging. Reconnecting with feelings, experiences or memories we may have been avoiding or haven’t thought about for a long time can often be difficult and upsetting. However, it can be a very rewarding and liberating experience. Therapy can help us:

  • Feel much more connected to ourselves and our feelings.

  • Understand ourselves and the way we behave better, including why we respond in certain ways to particular people and situations.

  • Use this understanding to cope better with situations and emotional demands.

  • Improve our relationships and interactions with others.

  • Feel more positive about ourselves and confident to make changes in our life that we might desire and to find ways to live richer, fuller lives.
